VSLA meeting and loan made confident of Kulsum to earn money through IGA
Kalapara is the southernmost coastal Upazila very near of the Bay of Bangle. And 15 KM away from this Upazila is Mithganj, a remote village of Mithaganj Union. The total population of this village is 1250 people, most of whom belongs to the Muslim community. Most of the people in the village are backward and under climate vulnerable. Every year some natural disaster has a negative impact on this village. 35 years old Kulsum begum lives in this village, She has a family with her husband and three children in which 2 daughters and one son who are all involved in studding in school level. Kulsum husband Babul Musulli somehow continues to support to the family through agricultural labor. Running a family of 5 with the income of only 1 was very difficult for Kulsum’s Husband. Therefore, there was scarcity and constant quarrels in their family.
In this circumstances in January 2022, Jago Nari started the implementation of the PRODRIPTA project with the technical assistance of Care Bangladesh. The project is a disaster and climate focus project and being implemented on VSLA, Youth group and CPP approach. In that sequence, Kulsum joined as member of a VSLA group named Sonartori. Kulsum likes the objective of VSLA group and started savings regularly to help her husband a little in the family cost.
Inspired by VSLA group discussion, she took a loan of 5000 taka from her Sonartori group on May 25, 2023 and started rearing broiler chickens. It is mentioned that in last May 2023, she participated in the training organized by PRODRIPTA project and got an idea about the disease of chickens and duck and collected the mobile number of the trainer from Upazila livestock officer, which is very helpful in her chicken rearing. She took care of her chickens very carefully, feeds and vaccinated them so that her chicken s group up in no time. As result, she sold the first shipment on July 15, and made a profit 7000 takas.
Kulsum will use the profit from the sale of chickens to grow her farm and some money will pay her children private tuition fees and some money for the help of her family. She said VSLA group meeting has opened my mind and I believe, I will not have trouble running my family anymore.
